The smells of home..

Did you know that your sense of smell is the only sense you have that is directly hard-wired to your brain?
This is why smell can be linked to memory.  I find it amazing how many memories I have based on different things I have smelled.

One of my favorite scents, although I don’t even like coffee, is hazelnut.  I associate the smell of this delicious coffee with a shop in New Jersey that my parents used to visit every time we went to Long Beach Island on vacation.  It’s out of the way in Smithville, a historic town that we also enjoyed visiting for the quaint shoppes and the danish from the bakery.  I can still imagine the wonderful smells that greeted us as soon as we opened the coffee shop door.  Yummm!

Each of us can name scents that we love, and we can just as easily name scents that turn us off.  Immediately.  What triggers our reactions to these scents?  They’re very personal and so different.  What one person finds appealing other people may hate.  Think of your favorite candle or perfume.. what do you love about it?  Is it the smell itself, or is it a memory or person that you associate that scent with?

My favorite Yankee scents

I love Yankee Candles.  With hundreds of millions in sales each year, it’s obvious that people want their homes and vehicles to smell good.  I realized the power of scent long ago, and often have candles lit in my own house {especially when I am having guests over or hosting a party}.

I believe that scent can also be used as a sales tool.  Realtor Estate agents have used candles or the allure of fresh-baked cookies to help when staging an open house.

The problem with candles is that they can be extremely unsafe.  Because of this, people are finding alternatives to keeping their homes smelling wonderful.  I really like flameless wickless candles.  For those that love the soft glow of candlelight but don’t like an overpowering aroma, a battery operated candle flameless candle can suffice.  My mother-in-law likes Candle Impressions.  The pillar candle displayed below is from this company.  In addition to the look of a flickering candle, it gives off a mild vanilla scent.

My Scentsy warmer

I discovered Scentsy through a friend of mine.  I fell in love with the gorgeous warmers and delicious scents.

Hosting a party is so much fun!
Imagine.. gathering your closest friends together for a fun evening where you can savor in the memories that all these wonderful scents bring to mind.  Every time I have a Scentsy party I take the sample testers into work.  It sparks a lot of conversation about various scents and what everyone likes or dislikes.  It’s amazing how quickly people are willing to join the discussion, but even more amazing to me how many differences of opinions there are on scents.

My favorite Scentsy bars
My Scentsy collection keeps growing.  I really love the fact that my home smells wonderful, and I don’t have to be concerned for the safety of my family.  I can leave my warmers turned on for hours without worry.
When you’re a mom of small children, safety in design tends to take priority over beauty.  I’m so glad to be able to enjoy both!  If you don’t have children or yours are grown, I am sure you can still appreciate alternatives to candles and the importance of home safety, especially around the holidays.  Candles and Christmas tree lights are the cause of far too many house fires this time of year!
When you’re lighting a candle, turning on your warmer, or baking those Christmas goodies this month; be sure to take in an extra deep breath, savor the delicious smells.. and enjoy the memories they invoke!
It is our prayer that everyone has a SAFE and blessed Holiday Season!
